The Kano State Hisbah Board has arrested 16 individuals during operations targeting alleged immoral activities. The Deputy Commander-General, Mujahiddeen Aminuddeen, confirmed the arrests occurred at multiple locations including El-Kanemy Suite along Yahaya Gusau Road, BUK Road, Danbare, and Layin Shisha areas.
Details of the Arrests
According to Aminuddeen, the operation resulted in the apprehension of six men and ten women. All suspects are first-time offenders and are currently undergoing counseling at the Hisbah Board headquarters.
“We usually preach to them, invite their relatives, and counsel them. They then sign an undertaking not to engage in such acts again,” Aminuddeen stated.
Monitoring and Rehabilitation
The Hisbah Board will continue to monitor the released individuals to encourage positive behavioral change. This approach aims to rehabilitate rather than punish first-time offenders.
Background on Hisbah Operations
The Kano Hisbah Board enforces Sharia-related regulations in the state, regularly conducting operations against activities deemed contrary to Islamic moral codes, including alcohol consumption, prostitution, and other social misconduct.
Previously, the board arrested over 600 individuals during Sallah celebrations for various moral offenses and recovered 66 missing children during a crackdown on indecent dressing. For the Sallah period, Hisbah deployed 9,500 operatives to ensure cultural compliance.
In a separate incident, Hisbah officers arrested individuals allegedly organizing a same-sex marriage ceremony in the state. The Deputy Commander shared details of how suspects were apprehended at an event center.
