The Inspector General of Police, Tunji Disu, has issued a directive for the immediate arrest of individuals driving vehicles without number plates or with their number plates covered. This order comes as part of a broader effort to curb impunity and reduce crime in Nigeria.
Crimes Linked to Covered Number Plates
Speaking to guests in his office recently, the IGP highlighted that a significant number of crimes have been committed by people concealing their vehicle identification. He noted that covering number plates has become a common tactic among criminals to evade detection. Additionally, he observed that some individuals have turned this practice into a status symbol, which he described as unacceptable.
Matching Order to Police Officers
Disu stated that he has given a matching order to police officers across the country to arrest anyone found driving without a number plate or with their plate covered, regardless of their social status. He emphasized that this behavior will no longer be tolerated and that the police force is committed to enforcing the law uniformly.
Ending Impunity in Nigeria
The Inspector General reiterated that the police force is working diligently to end impunity in Nigeria. The directive on number plates is one of several measures aimed at ensuring accountability and safety on the roads. By targeting this specific offense, the police hope to deter criminal activities and promote lawful conduct among motorists.
