IJF Orders NJF to Conduct New Election Over Alleged Malpractices
IJF Orders NJF New Election Over Alleged Malpractices

The International Judo Federation (IJF) has directed the Nigeria Judo Federation (NJF) to consider organizing fresh elections open to all eligible candidates to restore order within the federation. In a letter dated June 10 and addressed to NJF President Musa Oshodi, the IJF expressed concerns over the federation's governance and electoral process, stating that the most recent election may not have fully complied with transparency and procedural requirements set out in IJF regulations.

IJF Raises Concerns Over NJF Governance

The IJF emphasized its responsibility to ensure all member federations operate according to principles of good governance, transparency, and inclusiveness. The letter noted that while the NJF Statutes were transmitted to the IJF on September 30, 2025, it remains unclear whether these statutes were formally approved by the General Assembly. The IJF stressed that statutes must be duly adopted by the General Assembly before serving as the legal basis for any electoral process.

Call for New Elections

The IJF requested an update on the current electoral situation within the NJF, noting that conditions for a fully transparent and inclusive election may not have been met. It invited the NJF to organize a new election within three months, in full compliance with IJF regulations and applicable national requirements. Until this process is completed, the IJF will not formally recognize the current leadership for official representation and participation in IJF activities.

Potential Investigation Mechanism

The IJF drew attention to Article 3.2 of its statutes, which allows the IJF president to appoint a representative to conduct investigations if a dysfunction affecting a member federation is reported. The findings would be submitted to the IJF Executive Committee for appropriate action. The IJF expressed hope that such a mechanism would not be necessary and expressed confidence that the NJF would take appropriate steps to address the situation.

Background of the Crisis

The Guardian recalls that the National Sports Commission attempted to broker peace among warring factions in January, with some aggrieved parties agreeing to work within the Musa Oshodi-led board. However, tensions resurfaced when stakeholders claimed the NJF leadership was not adhering to the terms of the peace pact.
