Jos Petty Trader Returns N1 Million Found in Purchased Goods, Guided by Faith
An act of remarkable honesty at Terminus Market in Jos has captured widespread admiration after a petty trader returned a substantial sum of money she discovered concealed within goods she had purchased. The incident underscores the powerful influence of personal values and religious faith in everyday life.
Discovery and Immediate Decision to Return the Cash
Madam Serah Luca, a Christian petty trader residing along Laminga Road in Jos, made the unexpected find after arriving home from the market. She had bought items from a Muslim businessman at Terminus Market, only to later uncover N1 million hidden inside a polythene bag among her purchases. Without hesitation, Luca resolved to trace the owner and return the money, a decision she attributes directly to her faith and ethical principles.
"I am a petty businesswoman. I know what it means to suffer loss. If I put that kind of money into my business, I believe God would punish me," Luca explained, highlighting her modest circumstances and unwavering commitment to integrity. Her actions stand as a testament to the moral fortitude that can thrive even in challenging economic environments.
Trader's Account of the Mistake and Gratitude
The owner of the money, Abubakar Dola, a polythene bag trader at Terminus Market, recounted how the error occurred. He had intended to transfer the N1 million through a POS operator but accidentally packed the cash inside one of the bags sold to Luca during a transaction worth N6,000. Dola expressed profound surprise and gratitude upon receiving the returned funds, having given up hope of recovery after three days.
"I am surprised to see her returning the money, because I did not know where I kept the money. I pray Allah rewards her with more than what she did for me. I pray Allah gives us more people of her kind and who fear Allah," Dola stated. His heartfelt appreciation underscores the cross-cultural respect fostered by such acts of honesty, bridging religious divides in a community often marked by tension.
Broader Context of Interfaith Harmony in Jos
This incident occurs against a backdrop of efforts to promote interfaith harmony in Jos, Plateau State. In a related development, residents of Anguwan Rogo and Anguwan Rukuba communities were recently rewarded with N1 million for protecting individuals of different faiths during periods of violence. Former lawmaker Gwani Muhammad Adam Alkali presented N500,000 to each community in recognition of their courageous interventions to shield both Christians and Muslims during attacks.
These events collectively highlight the potential for ethical behavior and mutual respect to transcend religious and ethnic lines, offering a hopeful narrative in a region occasionally strained by conflict. The story of Madam Serah Luca serves as a powerful reminder that integrity and faith can inspire actions that resonate deeply within and beyond local communities.
