The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Kano State Command has secured the conviction of a 28-year-old man for advertising cannabis for sale on social media. The Federal High Court in Kano sentenced Ashiru Idris to seven years in prison without the option of a fine, according to a statement by the command's Media and Advocacy Officer, Sadiq Muhammad Maigatari, on Wednesday, July 15, 2026.
Arrest and Conviction
On 22 April 2026, operatives of the NDLEA Kano Strategic Command, acting on the directive of the State Commander, CN DY Lawal, arrested Ashiru Idris following the circulation of a video on social media showing him publicly advertising cannabis sativa for sale. Hon. Justice SM Shuaibu of the Federal High Court 1, Kano, convicted Idris and sentenced him to seven years imprisonment, effective from the date of judgment (14 July 2026). The sentence carries no option of a fine.
NDLEA Commends Judgment
The NDLEA commended the court for delivering what it described as a landmark judgment. “The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) today commends the Federal High Court, Kano, for delivering a landmark judgment in a matter arising from public advertisement and sale of cannabis sativa,” the statement read. The Agency views this decisive sentence as a strong deterrent to individuals who publicly promote or engage in illicit drug trade.
Commander Lawal said, “This judgment reinforces our resolve to confront drug offenders who brazenly promote illegal substances on public platforms. We will continue to act swiftly on credible leads and ensure offenders are brought to justice.”
Appreciation and Call to Action
The Command also expressed appreciation to the Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the Agency, Brig. Gen. Mohammed Buba Marwa (rtd), CON, OFR, for his steadfast support and guidance, which have bolstered the command’s operations and successes in Kano. The Agency called on all stakeholders — including families, community leaders, social media platforms, and the general public — to remain vigilant and support ongoing efforts to curb substance abuse. “Members of the public with relevant information that can assist in the fight against illicit drugs are urged to come forward,” the statement added.
