Tragic Pit Collapse in Kano Claims Multiple Lives
A devastating sand pit collapse in Kano State, northwest Nigeria, has resulted in multiple fatalities, with several brick-workers feared dead after the incident occurred on Wednesday morning, March 25. The tragedy unfolded at Ridawa village in Ghari Local Government Area, where labourers were engaged in deep excavation work for brick production when the pit suddenly caved in, trapping many beneath the debris.
Community Panic and Eyewitness Accounts
Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic and immense sadness as the collapse triggered a frantic response from fellow workers and local residents. According to reports from Daily Trust and The Punch, the community rushed to the site to initiate rescue efforts, but the lack of adequate safety measures and supervision at the rural brick-making site complicated operations. Such incidents are reportedly not uncommon in these areas, highlighting ongoing safety concerns.
Federal Lawmaker Calls for Urgent Intervention
Sani Bala, the member representing Ghari/Tsanyawa federal constituency in the House of Representatives, has intervened in the crisis. He disclosed that preliminary reports suggest approximately 10 individuals might be trapped underground. Bala called for immediate assistance from relevant authorities, emphasizing the need for specialized rescue equipment to support the ongoing operations. He stated, "We need urgent assistance to save those still trapped. The community is doing its best, but professional rescue support is required."
Ongoing Rescue Efforts and Rising Concerns
As of the latest updates, rescue efforts are continuing, with villagers and emergency responders digging through the rubble in a desperate bid to reach those buried. However, several victims remain unaccounted for, raising fears that the death toll could increase. The situation underscores the urgent need for improved safety protocols in brick-making activities across rural Nigeria.
This tragedy adds to a series of recent incidents in Kano State, including the sudden deaths of two state lawmakers, Aminu Ungoggo and Sarki Daneji, who passed away within hours of each other, plunging the Kano State House of Assembly into mourning. The community now faces a dual crisis as rescue operations persist amid growing anxiety over the pit collapse victims.
