Tragic Drowning Claims Lives of Two Kano Teenagers Fleeing Phone Snatchers
The Kano community is mourning the tragic loss of two teenagers who drowned on Monday, March 9, while attempting to escape from suspected phone snatchers in the Kumbotso Local Government Area. The victims, identified as 18-year-old Sadiq Isyaku and Auwal Isyaku, met their untimely demise at Ring Road, Kureken Sani, after being accosted by a gang of hoodlums intent on stealing their mobile phones.
Final Conversation Recounted by Grieving Friend
Abubakar Sani, a close friend of the deceased, has provided a heartbreaking account of their final moments together just one day before the incident. He revealed that the trio spent over an hour on Sunday discussing life and the pervasive insecurity issues affecting Nigerian society.
"We met on Sunday. We spent over an hour gisting about life and even talked about the insecurity issues affecting our society," Abubakar recounted with evident emotion. "Auwalu was even teasing me that I am too fearful to fight when faced with hoodlums. Unknown to us, the same insecurity issue we talked about was the reason for their deaths."
The friend described struggling to come to terms with the loss, stating: "I still find it difficult to believe they are gone. I almost fainted when I received the news that their bodies had been pulled out of the water." In his tribute, Abubakar remembered the teenagers as exemplary young men who were kind and respectful, emphasizing that their passing represents a significant loss to all who knew them.
Emergency Response and Investigation Details
The Kano State Fire Service confirmed the incident in an official statement released on Tuesday, March 10. According to Public Relations Officer Alhaji Saminu Abdullahi, the service received a distress call from one Muhammed Abba reporting two bodies floating in open water at Ring Road.
Director Alhaji Sani Anas explained that rescue teams were immediately dispatched to the scene. Preliminary investigations determined that the victims had drowned while trying to evade their attackers. Despite the swift response, both teenagers were confirmed dead upon recovery.

This tragic incident highlights the ongoing security challenges facing Nigerian youth and the devastating consequences of criminal activities in urban areas.
Broader Context of Insecurity in Kano
This drowning tragedy occurs against a backdrop of concerning security incidents in Kano State. Earlier reports documented another heartbreaking case where a 30-year-old mother, Fatima Abubakar, and her six children were killed in a daytime attack. Witnesses reported her final plea of "Please don't kill me" before the fatal assault occurred while the children's father was at the market.
These incidents collectively underscore the urgent need for enhanced security measures and community protection strategies in Kano and across Nigeria. The loss of these promising young lives serves as a stark reminder of the human cost of criminal activities and the importance of addressing root causes of insecurity.
