Police Confirm N200 Million Ransom Demand
Kebbi State Commissioner of Police, Umar Muhammad Hadejia, disclosed on Monday that kidnappers have demanded N200 million for the release of Justice Faruku Hassan Bunza, a High Court judge abducted from his residence in Bunza Local Government Area. The commissioner provided the update during a press briefing in Birnin Kebbi, outlining the police response and investigation.
Justice Bunza was taken from his home along Zogirma Road in the early hours of Sunday, sparking widespread concern among the judiciary, legal practitioners, and residents. The police swiftly launched a response, subsequently learning of the ransom demand through the judge's family.
Kidnappers Contact Family and Court Registrar
According to Hadejia, the abductors contacted the judge's family directly, demanding the substantial sum for his release. Additionally, they reached out to a registrar of the High Court in Abuja as part of negotiation efforts. The commissioner assured the public that security agencies are treating the case with utmost seriousness.
Security Forces Deployed to Forest Areas
The police command has deployed a combined team of operatives and other security personnel to comb forests and suspected escape routes believed to be used by the kidnappers. Hadejia emphasized that every available lead is being pursued to ensure the judge's safe return. The abduction has heightened tensions in the state, with calls for increased security for judicial officers.
