The Kogi State Government has officially confirmed the safe rescue of all individuals abducted from the Daarul-Kitab Islamic Orphanage in Lokoja. The confirmation came in a statement released on Wednesday night, May 6, 2026, by the Commissioner for Information and Communication, Femi Fanwo.
Details of the Abduction
Gunmen had attacked the orphanage on April 26, 2026, and abducted 23 pupils, along with the proprietor’s wife. The incident sparked widespread concern and prompted an immediate security response from state authorities.
Earlier, on April 27, the government had announced the rescue of 15 victims following intensified security operations across the state. The remaining nine victims were freed during a coordinated rescue operation conducted in the early hours of Wednesday, May 6.
Security Operation
According to Commissioner Fanwo, the rescue mission was led by troops of the 12 Brigade of the Nigerian Army, who worked in collaboration with other security agencies. The operation was described as a well-coordinated search-and-rescue effort that ensured the safe return of all abducted persons.
The Kogi State Government commended the security forces for their professionalism and dedication, which led to the successful outcome. The government also reassured citizens of its commitment to maintaining security and protecting lives and property across the state.
