The Kogi State Government has announced the immediate suspension of the annual Echane Festival in Ebiraland, citing security concerns and the need to maintain public order. The decision was disclosed in a statement issued by the state Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Fanwo.
Security Intelligence Prompts Action
According to the government, the suspension followed credible intelligence reports indicating that activities linked to the festival could threaten public peace and security. Authorities warned that the event might lead to a breakdown of law and order in parts of Kogi Central Senatorial District.
While acknowledging the festival's cultural significance and its role in preserving the heritage of the Ebira people, the government emphasized that the safety of residents remains its top priority.
Governor Ododo Approves Suspension
The statement confirmed that Governor Usman Ododo approved the suspension to protect lives and property. “The Governor has directed that the Echane Festival be suspended with immediate effect in view of security reports and the need to preserve law and order,” the statement read.
The government has directed all security agencies in the state to enforce the directive and warned that anyone found organizing, participating in, or promoting activities related to the suspended festival will face legal consequences.
Commitment to Peace and Stability
Governor Ododo remains committed to preserving peace and stability across the state and will continue to take proactive measures to address security concerns. The government appealed to traditional rulers, community leaders, youth groups, and residents of affected communities to cooperate with security agencies and support efforts aimed at maintaining peace and harmony.
The statement added that security considerations will continue to guide decisions regarding public gatherings and activities across the state.
