Lagos Police Investigate Fatal Incident Involving Dispatch Rider
The Lagos State Police Command has launched a full investigation into the death of a 32-year-old dispatch rider, Emmanuel Jegede, who died after a crash along the Ikotun-Idimu Road in Alimosho. While some eyewitnesses claim that suspected hoodlums deliberately pushed him off his motorcycle, police authorities have cautioned against jumping to conclusions until all evidence is examined.
According to accounts from residents who witnessed the incident, the rider was involved in a minor collision with a tricycle earlier. The disagreement was reportedly settled by bystanders, but some youths allegedly demanded money for their intervention. An eyewitness quoted by Punch Metro stated that Jegede explained he did not have any money. The source alleged that the youths later waited along the road and pushed him as he rode past.
Conflicting Versions of Events Emerge
The rider reportedly lost control, crashed into the road median, and died at the scene before any help could arrive. The suspects are said to have fled immediately after the incident. However, police spokesperson SP Abimbola Adebisi said investigators have received two different versions of what happened.
One account suggests that the dispatch rider lost control while trying to avoid a pedestrian crossing the road. The second version claims that some boys were seen running from the area immediately after the crash, raising suspicion that they might have attacked or pushed the rider before he fell. Adebisi confirmed that officers recovered the victim's body and motorcycle after a report from a Federal Road Safety Corps officer.
Police Seek CCTV Footage to Establish Truth
The police are continuing their investigations and are making efforts to obtain CCTV footage from the area to determine the exact cause of the fatal crash. The command urged the public to remain calm and allow the investigation to run its course before drawing conclusions.
This incident adds to a series of road tragedies in Lagos. In a separate event, a motor boy died after multiple vehicle crashes involving six vehicles on Kara Bridge along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, following the overturning of a trailer carrying chemical substances. Emergency responders from LASTMA, LASEMA, FRSC, and the police rescued trapped victims but the motor boy later succumbed to injuries.
