LASTMA Launches Probe into N100,000 Extortion Allegation on Lagos Coastal Road
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has officially commenced a comprehensive investigation into a serious social media report alleging that its officers extorted the sum of N100,000 from commercial bus drivers operating along the Lagos Coastal Road. This allegation, which has sparked public concern, was brought forward by an individual identified as Tosin, who claimed that LASTMA officials arrested multiple commercial buses and demanded monetary payment before releasing the vehicles back to their drivers.
Authority's Response and Commitment to Integrity
In a formal statement released by the agency, LASTMA emphasized that it takes such allegations with the utmost seriousness, underscoring its status as a disciplined and professional government entity that does not tolerate any form of misconduct, abuse of office, or extortion. Consequently, the Authority has initiated a thorough, impartial, and comprehensive investigation into the matter to ascertain the facts and ensure justice is served.
Adebayo Taofiq, the Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment at LASTMA, confirmed that the probe is already actively underway. He stated, "This inquiry has commenced in earnest, and the Authority assures the public that any officer found culpable upon the conclusion of due process will face the full weight of the law, in accordance with established rules and disciplinary procedures."
Call for Evidence and Public Cooperation
Taofiq further extended an invitation to the accuser, Tosin, to assist with the investigation by providing concrete and verifiable evidence. He added, "In furtherance of this process, the individual identified as Tosin is invited to appear at the Office of the General Manager at LASTMA Headquarters in Oshodi with concrete and verifiable evidence to substantiate his claims, as the burden of proof rests on the accuser."
Reiterating LASTMA's unwavering commitment to transparency, accountability, and high standards of public service, the agency also urged members of the public to report any instances of misconduct through appropriate and verified channels. It assured that it remains dedicated to maintaining a traffic management system grounded in fairness, orderliness, and respect for the rights of all road users across Lagos State.
