Former Fire Captain Receives Life Sentence for Double Murder Following Movie Argument
A former California fire captain will spend the remainder of his life behind bars after being convicted of the brutal murder of his fiancée and her young son, a tragedy that unfolded from a dispute over a movie. Darin McFarlin, aged 47, was sentenced on April 13 to multiple life terms without the possibility of parole for the horrific crimes committed on August 21, 2025.
Deadly Argument Over Firefighter Film
According to the El Dorado County District Attorney's office, the incident began when McFarlin, his fiancée Marissa Divodi-Lessa Herzog, 29, and her two children were watching the 2008 Christian faith-based film "Fireproof," starring Kirk Cameron as a firefighter grappling with marital and personal issues. McFarlin reportedly became enraged by the portrayal of firefighters in the movie, leading him to storm off to his room in a fit of anger.
Divodi-Lessa followed him, and a heated argument ensued. During the confrontation, McFarlin strangled her, but she managed to break free and declared her intention to file a domestic violence report, threatening to expose the incident and potentially end his career.
Brutal Shooting and Tragic Escape
Fearing the consequences, McFarlin retrieved a loaded firearm and pursued Divodi-Lessa into the dining area, where he found her on the phone with a family member. In a violent act, he struck her over the head with the gun, checked her phone, and then shot her in the head, killing her instantly. Her 7-year-old son and 9-year-old daughter were present in the room during this terrifying ordeal.
McFarlin then turned the gun on the 7-year-old boy, shooting and killing him as well. He attempted to shoot the 9-year-old girl, but she begged for mercy and managed to escape by running around a kitchen wall. Unable to get a clear shot, McFarlin instructed her to leave through a dog door before he put his phone in airplane mode and fled the scene.
Arrest and Sentencing
Law enforcement officials located the 9-year-old girl safe and apprehended McFarlin a few hours later. Following his conviction, the court handed down a severe sentence: two consecutive terms of life without the possibility of parole, an additional life term, 50 years to life, and 15 years, ensuring he will never be released from prison.
This case highlights the devastating impact of domestic violence and the extreme measures some individuals will take to avoid accountability, resulting in irreversible loss and trauma for the victims' families.
