The Ondo State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a 62-year-old man for allegedly defiling a 12-year-old girl in Akure, the state capital. This disturbing incident was disclosed by the command's spokesperson, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, in an official statement released on Thursday, March 5, 2026.

Details of the Alleged Crime

According to the Police Public Relations Officer, the suspect, identified as Imeje Mathew, allegedly lured the minor into a nearby bush under the pretense of assisting her. This occurred after the girl visited his shop to charge her mother's mobile phone. It was there that he reportedly raped her.

The victim's mother, Adebayo Sefunmi, reported the incident to the police on March 3, 2026. She stated that the alleged defilement took place on February 28, 2026, at approximately 7:00 p.m. in the Ehin Ala area of Akure, where her children reside.

Police Response and Investigation

The case has been referred to the Gender-Based Offences Unit for discreet and thorough investigation. Preliminary findings support the allegations, indicating the suspect forcefully had unlawful carnal knowledge of the child.

The victim is currently receiving necessary medical treatment at a hospital to address the physical and psychological trauma. Meanwhile, the suspect remains in police custody as investigations proceed to ensure diligent prosecution.
