Benue Residents Beat Man Accused of Torturing Minor Maid, Handed to NAPTIP

In a dramatic incident in Makurdi, Benue State, angry residents have taken matters into their own hands by beating up a man accused of torturing a minor who served as his house help. The suspect, whose identity has not been disclosed, allegedly subjected the young girl to severe abuse and also assaulted his wife when she complained about his actions.

Human Rights Activist Intervenes

Human rights activist Zege Orkwande revealed the details in a Facebook post on Friday, April 3, 2026. Orkwande stated that he received a call from the Leader of the Catholic Youth Center regarding the case of the tortured minor. According to his account, the man brought the girl from Konshisha Local Government Area, and she was in poor health due to the harsh treatment.

"The guy in the photo brought the girl from the village. She's not looking well at all. I don't want to discuss the workload she's handling," Orkwande wrote. "He tortured her at any given opportunity. If the wife complained, he equally beat the wife."

Community Justice and Legal Action

The situation escalated when area boys witnessed the man's actions and contacted Orkwande. The residents then administered a beating to the suspect before Orkwande intervened. Orkwande has since handed the man over to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) at its Benue Command for further investigation and possible prosecution.

In his post, Orkwande added, "Today, luck ran out of him. Area boys saw his actions and called me. He received better beating from the area men. I took him to NAPTIP Nigeria, Benue Command. He's now cooling his head in cell." He also issued a plea to stop the torture of children in Benue State, highlighting the growing trauma such acts cause.

Broader Implications

This incident underscores ongoing concerns about child abuse and domestic violence in Nigeria. The involvement of NAPTIP suggests that authorities are taking the case seriously, with potential legal consequences for the accused. Community responses like this reflect public frustration with perceived slow justice systems, though vigilantism raises its own ethical and legal issues.

As investigations proceed, this case may prompt wider discussions on protecting vulnerable individuals and strengthening enforcement against such abuses in Benue and beyond.
