The Lawra Circuit Court in Ghana's Upper West Region has handed down a 20-year prison sentence with hard labour to a 47-year-old man convicted of incest and death threats against his 17-year-old biological daughter. The convict, Kwame Ti-Zaaeku, was found guilty after a full trial on July 24, 2026, presided over by His Honour Stanley Adjei.
Repeated abuse and threats
According to investigations by the Lawra District Police, Ti-Zaaeku repeatedly sexually abused his daughter, a Junior High School student, over an extended period. The court heard that he threatened to kill the victim if she disclosed the abuse to anyone. The survivor's bravery in reporting the incidents led to the arrest and prosecution of her father.
Sentencing and concurrent terms
The court sentenced Ti-Zaaeku to 20 years' imprisonment with hard labour for incest and 10 years' imprisonment with hard labour for threat of death, with both sentences to run concurrently. This means he will serve a total of 20 years behind bars. In addition to the custodial sentence, the court directed the Department of Social Welfare in Lawra to provide counselling and psychosocial support to the survivor to aid her recovery.

The Upper West Regional Police Command praised the investigators and prosecutor for their professionalism and dedication, which led to the successful prosecution of the case. The Command also urged members of the public to promptly report all cases of sexual and domestic abuse to the police to ensure victims receive protection and perpetrators are brought to justice. This case highlights the ongoing fight against child sexual abuse in Ghana, where traditional stigmas often hinder reporting. Authorities hope this sentence serves as a deterrent to others who may commit similar crimes.
