A high court in Akwa Ibom State has sentenced a 41-year-old man, identified as Uduak Akpan, to life imprisonment for the rape of an 11-year-old girl. The verdict was delivered by Justice Ntong Ntong of the Akwa Ibom State High Court sitting in Uyo, the state capital.

The convict, Uduak Akpan, was arrested in 2022 after he lured the minor into his apartment under the pretext of sending her on an errand. He then proceeded to rape her, leaving the victim traumatized. The case was prosecuted by the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) in collaboration with the state Ministry of Justice.
During the trial, the prosecution presented compelling evidence, including medical reports and testimony from the victim, who was visibly emotional. The defense counsel argued for leniency, citing that the convict was a first-time offender, but the court dismissed the plea.
