A tragic incident occurred in Aba, Abia State, where a man identified as Ogbonna was arrested for killing his neighbor, Onyema, with a pestle. The incident happened while Onyema was trying to stop a fight between Ogbonna and his wife.
Details of the Incident
Human rights activist Comrade Ochiegbu Marvelous disclosed the incident in a Facebook post on Friday, May 8, 2026. According to him, the tragic event took place on March 12, 2026, at Starline, Ogbor Hill area of Aba. Ogbonna and his wife were involved in a domestic dispute when their neighbor, Onyema, intervened to separate them and restore peace.
During the altercation, Ogbonna, who was allegedly holding a pestle and acting out of anger, reportedly attempted to attack his wife. However, he turned on Onyema and struck him on the neck with the pestle. Onyema fell unconscious and was rushed to the hospital, where he was later confirmed dead by a doctor.
Arrest and Investigation
Following the incident, Comrade Ochiegbu Marvelous, through the SD Behind Bars Human Rights Foundation Abia State Chapter, intervened. Ogbonna was arrested and handed over to the Azuka Police Division. The case was later transferred to the State SCID Abia State Police Command for further investigation and possible prosecution.
Ochiegbu noted that this unfortunate incident serves as a reminder of the dangers of violence and uncontrolled anger. The late Onyema lost his life while attempting to make peace. The suspect remains in police custody pending the outcome of investigations.
