Abuja Court Sentences Businessman to Sweep Mosque for Stealing Cables
A Magistrates' Court in Abuja has handed down a unique sentence to a businessman convicted of stealing electrical cables from a mosque during Ramadan. The court ordered Musa Ibrahim to sweep the premises of the Amir Mosque in Wuse II for one month as punishment for his crimes.
Guilty Plea and Sentencing
Magistrate Lami Sani pronounced the sentence after Ibrahim pleaded guilty to charges of mischief and theft. Before the sentencing on Tuesday, the convicted businessman begged the court for leniency and made a solemn promise never to commit such an offence again.
The prosecutor, A.A. Adeleju, presented the case details to the court, revealing that Ibrahim had trespassed into the mosque on March 5 under the false pretense of collecting Ramadan food. While other community members waited in line for the charitable meal, Ibrahim used a back door to access and remove the mosque's electrical cables.
Investigation and Recovery
During police investigations following the incident, Ibrahim fully confessed to the crime. The electrical cables, valued at approximately N2 million, were successfully recovered from him by law enforcement authorities.
The court's decision to impose community service at the very location of the crime represents an unusual approach to sentencing for property crimes in the Federal Capital Territory. This case highlights both the vulnerability of religious institutions to criminal activity and the judicial system's creative approaches to punishment and rehabilitation.
The Amir Mosque in Wuse II serves as an important religious center for the Abuja Muslim community, particularly during Ramadan when charitable activities and communal prayers increase significantly. The theft of essential electrical infrastructure during this sacred period added particular gravity to the offense in the eyes of both the community and the court.
