South African Man Sentenced to Life for Brutal Murder of Girlfriend
The High Court of South Africa in Mbombela, Mpumalanga, has delivered a life imprisonment sentence to a 35-year-old man for the horrific murder of his girlfriend, whom he set on fire during a violent domestic altercation in Carolina. Innocent Sthembiso Maseko was convicted of murdering Mbali Lucy Ngubeni following a physical confrontation at their home in Silobela, Carolina. According to National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Monica Nyuswa, the couple, who were in a domestic relationship and living together, began arguing in their bedroom on August 20, 2024.
The argument quickly escalated into a physical fight, during which Maseko poured petrol over Ngubeni and ignited her. Despite suffering severe burn injuries, Ngubeni managed to escape the room and run down the passage of the house, calling for help from a friend who was sleeping in another room.
Attempts to Save the Victim
The friend rushed to assist and extinguished the flames by pouring water over Ngubeni. She was then rushed to a hospital for emergency treatment but tragically succumbed to her injuries a week later. The incident was promptly reported to the police, leading to Maseko's arrest and subsequent legal proceedings.

During the trial, Maseko pleaded not guilty and claimed he was not present when Ngubeni caught fire.
