Mob Lynches Palm Wine Tapper Over Double Murder in Edo

The Edo State Police Command has confirmed the lynching of a palm wine tapper by an angry mob after he allegedly killed two persons in Usen community, Ovia South West Local Government Area of the state.

Daily Trust reported on Monday, May 18, 2026 that the deceased, identified as Wale Sunday, allegedly attacked and killed two persons with a cutlass without provocation on May 12. Sunday, who was said to be under the influence of a substance known as 'Colos,' reportedly picked up a heavily sharpened machete and attacked residents, killing two people before he was eventually overpowered and killed by an angry mob.

It was learnt that he entered the street wielding a sharp cutlass, beheaded the first person he encountered, and proceeded to kill another victim. Sources said the deceased also inflicted machete cuts on Osaro Aragbala, a member of the Edo State Security Corps, who attempted to restrain him from carrying out further attacks.

A source said Sunday was initially overpowered by members of the corps, but an enraged mob later took control of the situation and lynched him, bringing the death toll to three. The Deputy Corps Commander, Operations, Edo State Security Corps, Richard Balogun, who confirmed the incident, described it as horrible and disturbing.

The spokesperson of the Edo State Police Command, Eno Ikoedem, who confirmed the incident, said the bodies of the deceased were evacuated to a mortuary, while the injured member of the Edo State Security Corps was taken to a hospital for treatment. The PPRO added that a bag belonging to Sunday was recovered at the scene and that a substance suspected to be 'Colos' was found inside it.
