A mother in the United States has been accused of killing her daughter and then reporting her missing, authorities said.

Charges Filed Against Mother

Staci Wind, 50, of Richwood, West Virginia, faces a first-degree murder charge in connection with the death of her 26-year-old daughter, Ayla Wind. The arrest came days after the younger woman was reported missing.

Wind was taken into custody on Saturday, May 23, 2026, according to law enforcement officials.

Discovery of the Body

According to a news release cited by WCHS, Ayla Wind was reported missing on May 18. Troopers stated that the arrest followed the discovery of a shallow grave containing a human body on Friday at Summit Lake in Greenbrier County.

Authorities have not released additional details about Ayla Wind's death or what led investigators to arrest her mother.

Staci Wind is currently being held without bond at the Central Regional Jail.
