While the situation was being managed at the scene, Joseph Iche Johnson, believed to be Ebuka's superior, arrived and engaged in a confrontation with the officer.

During the ensuing argument, it is alleged that the Air Force officer discharged his firearm, resulting in Johnson sustaining fatal injuries. The victim was rushed to a military hospital but was pronounced dead upon arrival.
