The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has announced a solidarity and advocacy rally in Oyo State scheduled for Monday, June 1, following the abduction of students and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area. NANS President Akinteye Babatunde Afeez issued the call in an invitation circulated to all NANS chapters nationwide on Friday.
Demand for Immediate Action
Afeez described the continued detention of the victims as distressing and unacceptable, emphasizing that Nigerian students can no longer remain silent while innocent pupils and educators are held by abductors. The rally aims to demand urgent action from security agencies and relevant authorities to secure the immediate release of those kidnapped.
Planned Activities
The solidarity movement will include visits to the affected schools: Community High School/Grammar School, Ahoro-Esiele; L.A. Primary School, Ahoro-Esiele; and Yawota Baptist Nursery and Primary School. NANS will also visit the Commissioner of Police, Oyo State Command, and the Director of the Department of State Services (DSS) in the state before embarking on a peaceful walk against insecurity in Ibadan.
Call for Participation
Akinteye urged all NANS structures, student leaders, activists, stakeholders, and well-meaning Nigerians to join the movement in demanding justice and the safe rescue of the victims. He noted that two weeks have passed since the attack, and the abducted individuals have yet to be rescued, making action imperative.
During the attack, gunmen invaded Community High School, Ahoro-Esinle, and Yawota Baptist Nursery and Primary School in Oriire Local Government Area, abducting seven teachers and 39 students. A teacher, Michael Oyedokun, was reportedly killed, and a two-year-old toddler, Christianah Akanbi, was among those kidnapped.
