NDLEA Seizes 498kg Cannabis in Edo Shrine, Arrests Two

The Edo State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has uncovered a significant cache of illicit drugs hidden inside a shrine. A total of 498 kilograms of skunk cannabis was recovered during a coordinated raid in the Owan East Local Government Area.

Discovery at Igwe Community

According to NDLEA Commander in Edo State, Mitchell Ofoyeju, the seizure occurred on May 22, 2026, following an intelligence-led operation at Igwe Community. The drugs were abandoned by members of a drug syndicate, with the prime suspect, a notorious drug baron known as Asrenre, still at large.

Ofoyeju stated: “The operation led to the recovery of 59 bags of skunk cannabis weighing 489 kilograms, as well as 9 kilograms of cannabis seeds, totaling 498 kilograms.”

Resistance from Locals

During the raid, some youths resisted, claiming the location was a sacred home of their deities and should not be desecrated. However, a thorough search led to the discovery of the cannabis. Ofoyeju emphasized that the NDLEA Act empowers the agency to search any location where narcotic drugs are believed to be concealed.

Arrests Made

In a related operation within the same community, operatives arrested 50-year-old Sunday Oghaimen, who was allegedly found with 945 grams of cannabis and 19 grams of Tramadol. Additionally, 33-year-old Esther Igbafe was apprehended with 874 grams of cannabis, 19 grams of tramadol, and three grams of Swinol.

All suspects are in custody, and the recovered exhibits have been documented and secured. Investigations are ongoing to dismantle the criminal network and track down the fleeing drug baron, Asrenre.

Commitment to Combating Drug Trafficking

Ofoyeju reiterated the agency's commitment to staying ahead of drug criminals through superior intelligence and adherence to standard operating procedures. He warned that no location would serve as a safe haven for drug traffickers.
