NDLEA Warns: Verify Overseas Packages to Avoid Jail

NDLEA Issues Stern Warning to Nigerians on Receiving Packages from Abroad

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has issued a critical warning to Nigerians, urging them to exercise extreme caution when receiving packages from overseas. The agency emphasizes that accepting such consignments without full knowledge of their contents could lead to severe legal repercussions, including potential imprisonment.

Criminal Tactics and Legal Risks Exposed

In a post shared on X on Sunday, April 10, the NDLEA's spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, revealed that drug criminals operating from abroad are increasingly using deceptive methods. These individuals often conceal illicit drugs within shipments and designate unsuspecting family members or friends in Nigeria as recipients through courier services. Babafemi stressed that anyone who accepts these packages risks being held criminally liable for possession and conspiracy if illegal substances are discovered.

"Some criminal minds will stay abroad and send consignments used to conceal illicit drugs and then make their family members or close friends as consignees who will receive the cargoes on their behalf from courier companies," Babafemi stated. He advised that if you must receive cargo on behalf of someone abroad, ensure you know every item in the shipment, possibly through a recorded video call at the point of packaging. Otherwise, he urged Nigerians to decline such requests regardless of any incentives offered.

Recent Seizures Highlight the Danger

Babafemi pointed to recent incidents as evidence of this threat, noting that NDLEA officers have made seizures of illicit drugs hidden in imported snacks. "When you're arrested with the consignment here as the designated receiver of the goods, you bear the criminal liability of possession and conspiracy with jail as the end," he warned. He encouraged the public to share this information widely to prevent others from falling victim to such schemes.

The agency's message is clear: to avoid becoming entangled in criminal activities, Nigerians should never accept parcels whose contents are unknown. This proactive stance aims to protect citizens from unwitting involvement in drug trafficking and its associated legal penalties.
