Five members of the Nnabugwu family were discovered dead inside their residence in Umuimo Village, Osisioma Local Government Area of Abia State, on Tuesday, July 22, 2026, after neighbours forced entry due to prolonged absence. The family had not been seen since Saturday, July 19, 2026, prompting concern among community members.
Discovery and Scene
Neighbours broke into the home after repeated attempts to contact the family failed. Inside, they found the five bodies in the sitting room, positioned as if they had been eating together. Partially consumed food, including cooked chicken and groundnuts, was present, leading to speculation about possible food poisoning or generator fumes as the cause. The bodies were in an advanced state of decomposition.
Following local tradition, community members performed customary rites before the bodies were removed and taken to a morgue for preservation.
Police Confirmation and Investigation
Abia State Police Public Relations Officer Maureen Chinaka confirmed that the Osisioma Divisional Police Headquarters received a report on July 22, 2026, from Kachi Nnabugwu, a brother of the deceased, who had been unable to reach his brother by phone and went to the house in person, according to Nations newspaper.
"Upon arrival, repeated knocks yielded no response. They subsequently forced entry into the house, where they discovered the lifeless and decomposing bodies of their brother and his family," Chinaka said. She added that officers visited the crime scene, conducted a preliminary visual inspection, and took photographs. The corpses have been deposited at the morgue for preservation and autopsy.
