Nigerian National Receives Eight-Year Sentence for Cocaine Importation in Malta

A 53-year-old Nigerian man has been handed an eight-year prison term by a Maltese court after confessing to importing nearly one kilogram of cocaine into the country via swallowed capsules. Stanley Anayo Chukwu Chukwukere, described as having no fixed address, admitted to the serious drug offences, as reported by the Malta Independent on Friday, April 10, 2026.

Charges and Arrest Details

The accused faced four primary charges, including conspiring with others locally or internationally to import and traffic cocaine, importing or preparing to import cocaine without authorisation, possessing cocaine under circumstances indicating it was not for personal use, and supplying or offering to supply the drug to others without a licence. Chukwukere was apprehended at Malta International Airport on July 2, 2025, shortly after arriving on a flight from Brussels.

During a joint operation involving police, customs officers, and airport officials targeting arriving passengers, Chukwukere was flagged for further inspection due to carrying only a small bag. Although initial checks of his person and belongings revealed nothing suspicious, he later admitted at Mater Dei to having swallowed the pills.

Legal Proceedings and Guilty Plea

Initially pleading not guilty during his arraignment, Chukwukere changed his plea to guilty on February 23, 2026, for all charges. A joint application between the Attorney General led to an agreement on the punishment, resulting in an eight-year effective imprisonment and a €15,000 fine. The court noted that while the guilty plea was not entered at the earliest stages, it was made before the Bill of Indictment was issued.

Court's Reasoning and Sentencing

In its decision, the court emphasised the serious nature of the offences, considering the importation of one hundred capsules containing 981.4 grams of cocaine with an average purity of 87% and an estimated street value of €57,903. The punishment was designed to reflect the gravity of organised drug crime, particularly involving large quantities.

The Criminal Court, presided over by Judge Natasha Galea Sciberras, sentenced Chukwukere to eight years effective imprisonment, fined him €15,000, and required him to pay €1,559.39 in expert costs to the Registrar. Additionally, the court ordered the forfeiture of his movable and immovable assets and the destruction of the drugs unless needed in separate proceedings.
