A Nigerian woman residing in Ghana has been sentenced to a prison term for physically assaulting her young daughter, according to a ruling from the Ashanti Regional court.
Court Conviction and Sentence Details
The Circuit Court at Tafo in Kumasi delivered its verdict on Tuesday, December 23, 2025. The convict, 34-year-old Beauty Alakwe, was found guilty of causing harm to her nine-year-old daughter. The court sentenced her to 15 months in prison with hard labour and additionally imposed a fine of 6,000 Ghanaian cedis.
Alakwe failed to pay the mandated fine. Consequently, she has been remanded at the Central Prisons in Kumasi to serve her full sentence.
How the Case Unfolded
The incident, which led to the legal action, occurred on 22 November 2025 at Duase, near Kenyasi in the Ashanti Region. A concerned local resident reported the assault to the authorities with the assistance of the area’s Assembly Member.
The Kenyasi District Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU), operating under the Tafo-Pankrono Division of the Ghana Police Service, took up the investigation. Their work culminated in the successful prosecution of the case by the Ashanti Regional Police Command.
Welfare of the Children and Police Statement
In a significant move to protect the minors involved, the presiding judge issued directives concerning the victim and her nine-year-old brother. The court ordered the Department of Social Welfare in Mamponteng to collaborate with the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection. Their mandate is to ensure the welfare and eventual reunification of both children with their family in Nigeria.
Following the conviction, the Ashanti Regional Police Command acknowledged the public's role in the case. They praised the cooperation from citizens during the investigation. The command also used the opportunity to reiterate its strong stance against mob justice, emphasizing its unwavering commitment to protecting children and all vulnerable persons within society.
