Nigeria Police Extradite Fugitive to United Kingdom for Murder and Drug Offenses
The Nigeria Police Force, operating through the INTERPOL National Central Bureau (NCB) in Abuja, has successfully coordinated the extradition of Matthew Chukwuemeka Adebiyi to the United Kingdom. He is set to face serious criminal charges, including murder and drug trafficking, as part of an ongoing international law enforcement effort.
Background of the Case and Extradition Request
The extradition process was initiated following a formal request from United Kingdom authorities in September 2024. They sought to locate, arrest, and extradite Adebiyi due to his alleged involvement in the murder of Joshua Boadu on June 18, 2018. After the incident, Adebiyi reportedly fled to Nigeria to avoid arrest. Additionally, he is accused of participating in the supply of crack cocaine, a Class-A controlled substance, in the UK between October 2017 and March 2018.
Arrest and Legal Proceedings in Nigeria
Operatives from the INTERPOL NCB Abuja arrested the suspect on January 23, 2025. Subsequently, extradition proceedings were commenced at the Federal High Court, Lagos Judicial Division, under Suit No. FHC/L/CS/416/2025. On February 16, 2026, Honourable Justice A.O. Faji granted the application for extradition, in compliance with the Extradition Act, Cap E25, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.
Execution of Extradition and Handover
In accordance with the court order and after the execution of a surrender warrant by relevant Nigerian authorities, Adebiyi was formally handed over to United Kingdom law enforcement officials on April 14, 2026. The handover took place at Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos, ensuring his transfer for diligent prosecution in the UK.
