The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has constituted a high-powered investigative team to probe the deaths of some suspected illegal miners arrested during enforcement operations in Niger State. The suspects were arrested on September 15 and 16, 2026, during a coordinated operation by the Niger State Command in the M.I. Wushishi/Lukoto axis, part of efforts to curb illegal mining and protect the nation's natural resources.
Investigation Directed by Commandant General
Following the deaths, the NSCDC Commandant General, Prof. Ahmed Abubakar Audi, directed the Deputy Commandant General in charge of Intelligence and Investigation to lead the probe into the circumstances surrounding the incident. According to a statement issued on Thursday by the Corps' National Public Relations Officer, Babawale Afolabi, the investigative team would examine the condition of the suspects when they were arrested, their period in custody, detention conditions, medical attention provided, and other circumstances surrounding their deaths.
Afolabi said the remains of the deceased had been deposited at the General Hospital, Minna, for medical examination and determination of the actual cause of death. He said the Corps was also working with relevant health authorities and sister security agencies to ensure appropriate medical and public-health measures were taken.
Caution Against Speculation on Cause of Death
The NSCDC cautioned against attributing the deaths to any specific disease, saying such reports remained subject to medical and laboratory confirmation. The Commandant General also directed that the health and welfare of all persons currently in custody be given priority, while measures were being taken to protect personnel who may have had contact with the affected persons.
The Corps condoled with the families of the deceased and assured them that the circumstances surrounding the incident would be thoroughly investigated and appropriately addressed based on established facts. It reiterated its commitment to combating illegal mining and protecting Nigeria's critical national assets, while upholding the dignity, safety, and fundamental rights of persons in its custody.
Public Urged to Allow Due Process
The NSCDC urged members of the public to remain calm and allow the investigative and medical processes to take their course, promising to provide further updates as verified information becomes available. The investigation is expected to clarify the sequence of events and any lapses in handling the suspects, with findings to guide future enforcement operations in the state.
