NUPCO Inaugurates Lagos Council, Warns Against Partisan Politics

The National Union of Private Cab Operators (NUPCO) has called on its members to steer clear of partisan politics, reiterating that its core mission remains the protection and advancement of members' business interests. This appeal was made during the inauguration of the union's Lagos State Council, which brought together cab owners from various branches across the state.

Inauguration and New Branches

The event also marked the opening of four new branches in Lagos: Domestic Terminal, Domestic Terminal 2, International Terminal Zonal branch, and Aero. These expansions aim to strengthen the union's presence and better serve its members in key operational areas.

Key Principles and Unity

Obasanjo Alinson, Vice President of NUPCO, emphasized that the organization was founded on three main principles, with the primary goal of safeguarding the collective interests of private cab operators throughout Nigeria. He stated that operators cannot function effectively in isolation, underscoring the necessity of unity to build a formidable association capable of addressing shared challenges within the sector.

Alinson stressed that while the union recognizes the role of politics in society, it will oppose any involvement driven by personal interests, ego, nepotism, or sentiment. He cautioned that allowing such influences to shape the union's agenda could hinder its objectives and undermine its long-term stability. He noted that the union's strength lies in its collective determination and shared goals, and that solidarity will help members achieve lasting growth.

Alinson also highlighted that the organization is motivated by a mindset of possibility, asserting that no challenge is insurmountable. He encouraged members to remain proactive, disciplined, and focused, emphasizing that selflessness and teamwork are essential for reaching the union's objectives.

Presidential Address and Expansion Plans

NUPCO President Adepegba Samuel, in his keynote address, called on state chapters to accelerate the creation of branches across the country. He described the inauguration of the Lagos chapter as the beginning of a broader expansion effort. He tasked zonal leaders with replicating the process in their respective regions and charged branch executives with holding regular meetings and maintaining accurate records of members.

Samuel also stressed the importance of adhering to the union's constitution to prevent misinformation. He noted that Lagos executives will serve as the operational hub in the state and urged proactive conflict management and unity among members.

New Chairman's Commitment

In his acceptance speech, the newly elected NUPCO Chairman for Lagos State, Adio Ajagbe, pledged to uphold the union's integrity and advocate for members' interests. Ajagbe is committed to establishing an inclusive administration centered on consultation, training, and collaboration with key agencies. He stated that Lagos would set an example for other states, emphasizing the importance of members' welfare and rights.

Ajagbe condemned the rising insecurity, high fuel costs, and inadequate infrastructure that negatively impact operators' livelihoods, stressing the urgent need to address these issues. He reaffirmed the commitment to unity, branch expansion, and strengthening partnerships across sectors to enhance operations and collective progress.

Capacity Building and Safety

In his message to the group, Rufus Olusesan, President of PERESSA, highlighted the importance of continuous capacity building for union members. He noted that training and orientation are vital for the union's development, and that members need exposure to diverse perspectives to better understand the union's principles and movement.

Olusesan emphasized that safety should always be at the core of union activities, urging leaders to focus on organized training programs. He noted that new members must be equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to perform effectively. He expressed confidence that with proper guidance, they will quickly reach their full potential in supporting the union's goals.
