Nursery Worker Sentenced to 24 Years for Heinous Child Abuse Crimes in Bristol

A nursery worker has been handed a 24-year prison sentence after being convicted of raping and sexually abusing young children entrusted to his care. Nathan Bennett, aged 30, was found guilty of multiple serious offences against vulnerable toddlers at the Partou King Street Nursery in Bristol.

Details of the Conviction and Charges

Bennett was convicted of two counts of rape, four counts of sexual assault, and two counts of assault by penetration. These charges specifically related to five boys, all aged between two and three years old. Additionally, Bennett had previously admitted to 13 other sexual offence charges involving four of the young victims.

The defendant was hired at the nursery in 2024 but was arrested less than a year later after CCTV footage captured him putting his hands down a child's trousers. This disturbing evidence led to a comprehensive investigation uncovering the full extent of his predatory behavior.

Court Proceedings and Victim Impact

During the trial, prosecutor Virginia Cornwall told the court that Bennett's actions represented 'every parent's worst nightmare.' She emphasized the profound betrayal of trust, stating: 'That a person entrusted to be responsible for your child, care for your child and nurture your child at times when you are unable to provide that parental care, abuses their position and sexually abuses that child.'

Staff members from the nursery, which closed last year, testified that Bennett would sit children on his lap for extended periods and acted 'territorial' over certain toddlers. Shockingly, the court also heard that he wore trousers with a hole in the crotch area, suggesting premeditated behavior.

Victim Testimonies and Family Trauma

Video interviews with two of the victims, identified only as Child A and Child E, were played to the jury. The mother of Child E recounted how her son explained to her that he had been abused at the nursery, telling the court: 'I got him to stop doing it. I asked him when that happened. He said it happened at nursery.'

Judge Hart described Bennett as 'evil' and an 'incorrigible and dangerous paedophile' during sentencing. The judge noted that Bennett 'prioritised sexual satisfaction over the well-being of children,' while the defendant rocked back and forth in the dock.

Judge Hart further stated: 'Because sexual interest in such very young children is thankfully very uncommon, I find it impossible to predict how long you will remain such a danger.' He added: 'Even if some of the children have no memory of what happened, the parents will never forget. The victim impact statements speak of their torment and how their lives have been contaminated by what you did.'

Broader Impact and Legal Response

Families whose children attended the nursery but were not directly abused expressed being 'devastated by the horrific abuse.' The law firm Leigh Day, which is supporting the parents and guardians, released a statement saying: 'Nothing can begin to explain the shock, anger and heartbreak we feel – or the profound and lasting impact we are sure this will have on families. The children were innocent and completely vulnerable; they were in a place that should have been safe.'

Bennett claimed during proceedings that he was 'emulating' how he was treated as a child and denied having a sexual attraction to children. However, the evidence presented and the severity of the sentence reflect the court's assessment of his dangerousness and the gravity of his crimes against the most vulnerable members of society.
