Odogwu of Asaba pleads for forgiveness after arrest over alleged rape

Ifeanyi Ogbonna, a content creator widely known as Odogwu of Asaba, has publicly pleaded for forgiveness following his arrest by the Delta State Police Command over the alleged rape of 20-year-old Favour Agbro. Police reports indicate that the young woman later died after ingesting a toxic substance in an apparent suicide.

Details of the Alleged Incident

According to the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, Favour Agbro travelled to Asaba on June 1, 2026, after being invited by Ogbonna. The content creator allegedly promised to train her in content creation and help her monetise her social media platforms. Instead, police allege that Ogbonna took her to a hotel, where he raped and physically assaulted her.

After returning home traumatised, Favour informed her parents about the alleged assault. She subsequently recorded a video detailing her ordeal before ingesting a toxic substance. She was rushed to a hospital but later died.

Arrest and Apology

Following a petition from the victim's family, the Commissioner of Police, Yemi Oyeniyi, ordered an investigation, leading to Ogbonna's arrest. In a viral video that has circulated widely on social media, Ogbonna is seen apologising to the victim's family while in police custody. “I am sorry. This is a very terrible mistake. I am ready to give everything,” he said, pleading for forgiveness from Favour's parents.

Police Statement and Ongoing Investigation

The Delta State Police Command has confirmed that investigations are ongoing and assured the public that no aspect of the case will be overlooked. Ogbonna remains in custody and has made statements considered useful to investigators. Police have stated that the suspect will be charged to court upon the conclusion of the investigation.

SP Bright Edafe stated, “The suspect has made statements that are useful to the investigation. We are leaving no stone unturned.”

Social Media Reactions and Unverified Claims

The case has sparked widespread reactions online, with the apology video drawing renewed public attention. Human rights activist Israel Joe shared screenshots he claimed were WhatsApp conversations between Favour and Ogbonna after the alleged incident, showing Favour asking for financial assistance for medical treatment. However, the Delta State Police have not authenticated these screenshots, and they have not been presented in court.

Additionally, unverified claims that Favour was a virgin and allegations by other women against Ogbonna have not been confirmed by the police. As of the time of reporting, Ogbonna has not been convicted of any offence; the allegations remain under investigation, and a court will ultimately determine his guilt or innocence.
