Ogun Police Clash with Polytechnic Students, Probe Ordered

Ogun State police operatives have been accused of assaulting students from Gateway Institute of Technology in Igbesa following the arrest of a student for allegedly possessing a substance called 'black soap.' The incident sparked a confrontation and has drawn widespread condemnation.

Incident Details

According to eyewitness accounts and viral videos, the trouble began when a student was stopped, searched, and allegedly found with the substance, leading to his arrest and detention. The situation escalated when the Students' Union Government (SUG) President, Ilo Temitope, along with other students, attempted to intervene and secure the release of their colleague.

In a video circulating online, the SUG president alleged that students were denied access to the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) and told to return the following day, which triggered protest chants. Temitope further claimed that armed officers arrived and confronted the protesters, with some attempting to intimidate the crowd with firearms.

Reports indicate that the SUG president was assaulted and briefly detained, along with other students. Another video showed a student with visible injuries, including blood around the mouth, accusing security operatives of using excessive force. A female voice in the background alleged that the SUG president was beaten while in custody.

Reactions and Demands

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) condemned the alleged assault, calling it disturbing and unacceptable. NANS demanded an immediate investigation, stating that the actions, if confirmed, violate students' fundamental rights and attack peaceful student unionism. They called for identification and sanction of all officers involved.

Student leaders from various Ogun State institutions demanded a public apology from the Igbesa Police Division and stronger protections against harassment, intimidation, and unlawful arrest. They urged authorities to ensure security operatives act within the law, especially in educational environments.

Police Response

The Ogun State Police Command confirmed it has ordered a full investigation. Police Public Relations Officer DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi quoted Commissioner of Police Bode Ojajuni as assuring a thorough examination to establish facts. The command stated that any officer found guilty of misconduct would face disciplinary action. It reiterated commitment to professionalism, respect for human rights, and peaceful relations with residents, including students. Authorities appealed for calm while investigations continue.

This incident adds to growing concerns over clashes between security operatives and students, with stakeholders calling for improved engagement, accountability, and respect for civil rights.
