Old Video of Imo Attack Recirculated as Fresh Incident

Social media users have been circulating a video clip of an attack, falsely suggesting it happened in Imo State on Thursday, 11 June 2026. A Facebook user, Vivian Irondi, posted the clip on Friday, 11 June, claiming that terrorists had invaded somewhere in Imo State, leaving over 10 people dead. Despite admitting she did not know where the attack occurred, she continued sharing the clip.

The post had garnered 333 comments, 246 likes, and over 11 reshares by Saturday morning. The video shows four bodies of slain family members—two adult women, a girl, and a man—lying in a pool of blood inside a shop. Security operatives are seen filming the bodies and discussing the attack. Based on their interactions, the location was identified as Amanaogu Community in Ihitenansa, Orsu Local Government Area of Imo State. Similar attacks also occurred in neighbouring villages at the same time.

However, verification revealed the clip is old. A journalist from the community confirmed the attack happened in January 2025, not recently. He explained that gunmen, later identified as cultists, killed families in beer parlours in Orsu. A reverse image search showed the video was first uploaded to Facebook in January 2025, when gunmen invaded Amanaogu and killed at least 11 people between 5 and 8 January 2025. The attack was reported by Nigerian newspapers, including The Nation, The Punch, and SaharaReporters, with the same photograph.
