Orphaned Boy, 13, Takes Own Life After Enduring Relentless School Bullying

In a heartbreaking incident, a 13-year-old orphan in New Hampshire committed suicide just one week after his birthday, unable to cope with the relentless bullying he faced at school and on the bus. Josiah Michael Dwinell tragically jumped off a bridge in Alstead, New Hampshire, on March 12, only eight days after turning 13, as confirmed by his aunt, Shaena Lyon, in a Facebook post.

Josiah had lost his mother, Amber, unexpectedly in 2021, according to her obituary, and was subsequently taken in by his grandmother. Lyon revealed that his grandmother was actively trying to address the bullying issues, but it remains unclear if Josiah was placed with his five siblings during this time.

Failed Interventions and Lack of Support

Lyon further disclosed that Josiah was hospitalized multiple times and attempted to seek help, only to be dismissed by others who claimed he was merely "seeking attention." She emphasized that no one outside his home intervened to assist him, despite the ongoing harassment at school and on the bus.

According to Lyon, Josiah seemingly reached a breaking point after a bus ride home, deciding he "couldn't handle the bullying anymore," which ultimately led him to leap from a high bridge over a river. Notably, Josiah never learned how to swim, adding to the tragedy of his death.

Family Tributes and Community Response

In a heartfelt tribute on a GoFundMe page set up for Josiah's funeral, Lyon described him as "an amazing brother, son, nephew, and all-around young man who meant so much to everyone who knew him." She added, "Josiah brought light and joy to our lives, and his absence leaves a hole in our hearts that can never be filled."

The fundraiser quickly surpassed its initial goal of $6,500 and was approaching $24,000 by Sunday evening, reflecting widespread community support. In the wake of his passing, many family members changed their social media profile pictures to the teal and purple suicide awareness ribbon, symbolizing their grief and advocacy for mental health issues.

This tragic event underscores the severe consequences of bullying and the critical need for effective intervention and support systems in schools and communities to prevent such losses.
