Former Edo State Governor and Senator representing Edo North, Adams Oshiomhole, has clarified his recent comments regarding the suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, amid public debate over his earlier remarks.
Oshiomhole's Clarification on Due Process
Oshiomhole explained that his comments were not intended to justify or comment on the merits of the suspension, but to emphasize the importance of due process and adherence to legislative procedures in handling disciplinary matters within the Senate. He noted that his position had been misinterpreted in some quarters, stressing that he remains committed to fairness, institutional integrity, and respect for parliamentary rules.
Call for Focus on Legislative Governance
The senator further reiterated that internal matters of the National Assembly should be addressed in line with established procedures, rather than being subjected to public misrepresentation or politicisation. His clarification comes amid heightened political discussions surrounding the suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, which has continued to generate reactions from stakeholders and members of the public.
Oshiomhole maintained that his earlier comments were taken out of context and urged the public to focus on the substance of legislative governance rather than personal or partisan interpretations. He said he would not want his remarks to be interpreted in a manner capable of undermining the integrity of individual senators or the institution of the Senate.
“Finally, I regret if my comments may have caused embarrassment to any senator or the 10th Senate as an institution,” he said.
The clarification is expected to ease tensions generated by the controversy and reinforce efforts by Senate leaders to move beyond the dispute that trailed Akpoti-Uduaghan’s suspension.
