The Oyo State Police Command has apprehended a suspected member of a kidnapping syndicate linked to the abduction of a 20-year-old farmer and cattle rearer, Michael Benua, in Oorelope Local Government Area. Efforts are ongoing to rescue the victim and capture other gang members.
Arrest and Investigation
In a statement on Saturday, Police Public Relations Officer DSP Ayanlade Olayinka said the breakthrough came during an investigation into the abduction reported at Okaka Police Division. The victim was taken in the early hours of June 19 when about eight armed men invaded Igboti Village via the Okutalogun axis. The assailants, armed with firearms and cutlasses, allegedly whisked Benua away to an unknown destination after attacking the community. They also stole N1.24 million and 50,000 CFA.
Following the report, Commissioner of Police Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga ordered an immediate manhunt. A joint security team comprising Okaka Police operatives, Amotekun Corps personnel, and local hunters launched coordinated searches in surrounding forests and communities.
Suspect Confession
A forensic sweep of the crime scene and intensive bush combing led to the arrest of 23-year-old Yahaya Auta, whose involvement was established during preliminary investigations. The suspect confessed to being a member of the kidnapping gang and is assisting investigators in tracking down other fleeing members and facilitating the victim's rescue.
The police have reinforced operations with its Anti-Kidnapping Squad as search-and-rescue efforts continue. The Command reassured residents that the incident is being treated with utmost urgency and seriousness, with intensified coordinated operations to ensure safe rescue and arrest of all involved.
The suspect remains in custody while investigations continue. The Command appealed to residents to remain calm and support security agencies with timely, credible information to aid operations and enhance public safety.
