The Oyo State Police Command has initiated a large-scale manhunt and rescue operation following the abduction of pupils, students, and school staff during coordinated attacks on educational institutions and communities in the Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.
Incident Details
In a statement released on Friday and posted on its official X handle, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, disclosed that the attacks occurred in the early hours of May 15, 2026, when armed hoodlums on motorcycles invaded schools in the area. According to police reports, the assailants simultaneously targeted Baptist Nursery and Primary School and Community Grammar School, which shares premises with L.A Primary School. The attackers abducted several pupils, students, and staff members, including the Vice Principal, Mrs. Alamu Folawe.
Casualties and Confiscations
The police confirmed that no pupil or student had been reported killed at the time of the statement. However, an assistant headmaster identified as Mr. Adesiyan was killed during the attack. Additionally, an okada rider was shot dead after reportedly resisting attempts by the attackers to seize his motorcycle. The assailants fled with a Toyota Corolla belonging to the abducted Vice Principal and later set the vehicle ablaze along a road leading to the forest.
Police Response
The police command has deployed tactical teams, operational assets, and intelligence platforms to the affected communities to prevent further breakdown of law and order, rescue the abducted victims, and apprehend those responsible. The statement assured residents that intensive operations are ongoing and urged the public to remain calm, vigilant, and supportive by providing timely and credible information that could aid the investigation and rescue efforts.
