Thousands of students sitting for the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) in Oyo State may face disruptions following the commencement of an indefinite strike by public school teachers across the state.
Strike Over Security Concerns
The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) directed its members to withdraw their services over growing security concerns, particularly the recent abduction of teachers and pupils in Oriire Local Government Area. The union stated that the industrial action would remain in force until authorities take concrete steps to address the security challenges facing teachers and students.
Impact on WAEC Candidates
With public secondary schools shut, concerns have mounted over the fate of candidates writing the ongoing WAEC examinations. Many students rely on their schools and teachers for access to examination centres and academic support. The indefinite strike has left thousands of candidates stranded, unsure of how to proceed with their remaining papers.
Parents and education stakeholders have expressed fears that the strike could negatively affect candidates preparing for their remaining examination papers. They have called on the government to urgently resolve the issues that led to the action, emphasizing the need for a swift resolution to prevent further disruption to the academic calendar.
The NUT has reiterated that the strike will continue until the government addresses the security concerns. Meanwhile, students and parents are left in a state of uncertainty, hoping for a quick intervention to ensure the smooth conduct of the examinations.
