The Bayelsa State Police Command has taken into custody a pastor and his wife following serious allegations of the rape and impregnation of a 13-year-old girl in Yenagoa, the state capital. The dramatic arrest occurred during a Sunday church service, causing significant confusion among the congregation.
Details of the Alleged Crimes and Arrest
According to police reports, the pastor is accused of sexually assaulting the minor on multiple occasions, both on the church premises and at his residence, starting from November 2025. The victim, who is reportedly a cousin of the pastor's wife, became pregnant as a result of the alleged abuse.
Eyewitnesses stated that the pastor initially attempted to flee through a back door but later surrendered to authorities after his wife was apprehended on the church grounds. The wife faces charges for allegedly paying N120,000 to procure an illegal abortion for the victim.
Investigation and Advocacy Group Involvement
Members of the Women Against Gender-based Violence and Do Foundation confirmed the incident to journalists, revealing that an initial interview with the victim indicated the abuse occurred five times. The advocacy group explained that the pastor allegedly took advantage of the girl when she visited the church to deliver a local bread known as Madiga to his wife.
The mother of the victim confronted the pastor and his wife but was reportedly persuaded by her sister not to "destroy God's house." She was then given N120,000 to arrange an abortion for her daughter, which she proceeded with after a medical scan.
Police Response and Legal Proceedings
The State Commissioner of Police, Iyamah Daniel Edebor, confirmed the arrest and assured that the case has been transferred from the Ekeki Division to the Gender unit at Police headquarters for thorough investigation and prosecution. The mother filed the rape complaint at the Ekeki Police Division after hearing the pastor and his wife publicly thank God for "defeating enemies" during a church service.
