Tragic Explosion at Plateau Filling Station Claims Two Lives
A devastating explosion at a filling station in Plateau State has resulted in the deaths of two welders and left three other individuals with injuries. The incident occurred in the Daffo community, located within the Bokkos Local Government Area, casting a shadow over the region.
Details of the Fatal Incident
The explosion took place on Friday, April 17, 2026, at the Natty Filling Station. According to reports, an underground fuel tank exploded during what was supposed to be routine maintenance work. The victims were engaged in welding repairs on a leaking section of the tank when the blast occurred.
Kefas Mallai, the Chairman of the Community Peace Observers in Bokkos LGA, confirmed the tragic event to journalists in Jos. He provided a detailed account of the circumstances leading to the explosion.
"Yes, it is true. Today, Friday, April 17, 2026, two persons died and three others were injured when an underground tank at a filling station in Daffo exploded during welding maintenance," Mallai stated.
Victims and Immediate Aftermath
The two individuals who lost their lives were identified as a welder and his apprentice. Mallai explained that they were attempting to weld the leaking part of the underground tank when the explosion happened.
"The dead victims were a welder and his boy. They were trying to weld the leaking part of the underground tank," he added.
It was revealed that the artisans believed the tank was safe to work on because it contained no fuel at the time. However, this assumption proved fatal.
"There was no fuel in the tank, so they believed it was safe. But immediately they commenced welding, the tank exploded, engulfing the area in flames and killing them instantly," Mallai recounted.
Injured Bystanders and Response
In addition to the fatalities, three other persons who were nearby watching the repair work sustained varying degrees of injuries in the blast. These individuals were bystanders who had gathered at the scene.
"The injured persons were bystanders who had gathered at the scene. They have been taken to hospital and are currently receiving treatment," Mallai stated.
The injured have been transported to a medical facility where they are receiving necessary care. The community has been left in shock by the sudden and violent nature of the explosion.
Calls for Improved Safety Measures
Mallai described the incident as unfortunate and emphasized the need for enhanced safety protocols during maintenance operations at fuel stations. This tragedy highlights the potential dangers associated with working on fuel storage infrastructure, even when tanks are believed to be empty.
The explosion serves as a stark reminder of the importance of strict adherence to safety guidelines in hazardous environments. Authorities may need to review and reinforce regulations governing maintenance procedures at petroleum facilities to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
As the community mourns the loss of life, questions about safety standards and oversight in such operations are likely to arise. The incident underscores the critical need for proper training, equipment, and precautionary measures when dealing with flammable materials and confined spaces.
