Gunmen Target Illegal Miners in Plateau, Leaving Three Dead Including Teenage Boys

In a tragic incident that has heightened security concerns in Plateau State, three individuals engaged in illegal mining activities were brutally attacked and killed by armed gunmen. The violent episode unfolded in Tenti Kampani Village, located within the Bokkos Local Government Area, casting a shadow over the region's ongoing efforts to curb unauthorized mineral extraction.

Details of the Deadly Assault

The attack occurred late in the evening on January 31, 2026, specifically at approximately 9:23 p.m. along the Machembe–Tenti road. According to security sources, the victims were returning to Tenti Village after conducting illegal mining at a hidden site within Bokkos LGA. During their journey, they were ambushed by gunmen who not only robbed them but also took their lives, leaving the community in shock and mourning.

Victims Identified and Security Response

Upon receiving reports of the attack, troops from Sector 5 of Operation Safe Haven (OPEP) swiftly mobilized to the scene. Upon arrival, they discovered the corpses of the victims, who were later identified as Raphael Amos, aged 30; Junior Malul, aged 15; and Nanfwang Hassan, aged 18. The bodies were subsequently evacuated by their families to the Tenti Primary Health Centre for preservation and burial arrangements, as confirmed by security analyst Zagazola Makama.

In response to this heinous crime, security forces have initiated offensive patrols across the general area. These efforts aim to apprehend the perpetrators and restore a sense of normalcy to the affected community. Preliminary investigations conducted by both police and military sources suggest that the attack was likely carried out by suspected armed robbers. Their motive appears to have been to dispossess the victims of illegally mined minerals, highlighting the dangerous nexus between criminal activities and illicit mining operations.

Illegal Mining and Curfew Imposition

It was noted that the deceased were involved in illegal mining activities, which directly contravene the existing ban and closure of all unauthorized mining sites in the area. This defiance has not only put their lives at risk but also contributed to the broader security challenges facing Plateau State. To prevent a potential breakdown of law and order following the attack, the Executive Chairman of Bokkos LGA, in consultation with Sector 5 troops and other security agencies, has imposed a daily curfew on the affected community. This curfew is in effect from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m., aiming to curb further violence and ensure public safety.

Ongoing Security Measures

Sustained intelligence-driven operations are currently underway to identify, track, and apprehend those responsible for this brutal attack. Security forces are also ensuring strict enforcement of the imposed curfew, as part of a broader strategy to maintain peace and stability in the region. This incident underscores the persistent threats posed by armed groups and the critical need for enhanced security measures to protect vulnerable communities in Plateau State.
