Major Police Operation in Edo Leads to Arrest of 65 Suspected Kidnappers
The Edo State Police Command has achieved a significant breakthrough in its fight against kidnapping with the arrest of 65 suspected kidnappers in Aviele community. The operation, conducted in the early hours of March 2, 2026, resulted in the recovery of N1,850,000 in cash believed to be ransom proceeds, along with military uniforms and other incriminating items.
Coordinated Midnight Raid Based on Credible Intelligence
According to a statement released by the command's spokesperson, ASP Eno Ikoedem, on Friday, March 6, 2026, the operation was launched following credible intelligence reports. Tactical teams from the State Headquarters collaborated with operatives from Area Command Auchi and Area Command Ekpoma to storm identified hideouts at Zango and Max Square Properties in Aviele.
The police acted on information that suspected kidnappers had been sighted in the area, supported by technical analysis linking ransom negotiation activities to these locations. The raid, which occurred at approximately 0245 hours, was executed with precision, leading to the successful apprehension of all suspects without any casualties.
Recovery of Exhibits and Ongoing Investigations
During the operation, law enforcement officers recovered substantial evidence, including the N1.85 million in cash, which is reasonably suspected to be proceeds from kidnapping ransoms. Additionally, uniforms and kits belonging to the Nigerian Army were seized, along with other items that could further implicate the suspects in criminal activities.
The suspects and all recovered exhibits have been transferred to the State Headquarters in Benin City, where discreet investigations are currently underway. These investigations aim to determine the extent of each suspect's involvement in kidnapping networks and to uncover any broader criminal operations in the region.
Police Leadership Commends Operatives and Reaffirms Commitment
Commissioner of Police for Edo State Command, CP Monday Agbonika, praised the operatives for their professionalism and effectiveness during the raid. He reiterated the command's unwavering commitment to dismantling kidnapping networks across the state, emphasizing that such operations are part of a broader strategy to enhance public safety.
CP Agbonika also called for continued support and cooperation from the general public, highlighting the crucial role that community intelligence plays in combating crime. The successful operation in Aviele serves as a testament to the police's dedication to addressing security challenges and protecting citizens from the threats posed by kidnappers.
