Police Use Viral CCTV Footage to Arrest Kidnap Syndicate in Ondo State
Operatives of the Ondo State Police Command have successfully arrested three suspected kidnappers after they were identified through viral closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage. The footage captured the suspects abducting a victim in Akure, the state capital, leading to a swift police response.
Details of the Arrest and Suspects
The suspects, identified as Mohammed Koro, 27, Muhammad Usman, 30, and Musa Alhaji, 23, were apprehended a few weeks after kidnapping a woman on Other Oda Road in the Akure South Local Council. The Police Public Relations Officer (PPO), Abayomi Jimoh, confirmed the arrest, stating that the command had been tracking the suspects since the video went viral in the state.
According to Jimoh, during the operation, three victims previously kidnapped by the syndicate—Tosin Adesida, Adeniran Adesuyi, and Adewunmi Adewusi—were rescued. They have been debriefed and taken to a hospital for medical attention. The suspected kidnappers have made useful confessional statements, and efforts are ongoing to arrest other members of the syndicate. They will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
Police Strategy and Public Assurance
Jimoh highlighted that the arrest was made under the leadership of CP Adebowale Lawal, in alignment with the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Disu's vision for technology-led policing and operational effectiveness. He explained, "The arrest followed the circulation of CCTV footage on social media showing the abduction of a victim by suspected criminals in the Oda area of Akure. Upon receiving the footage, the command immediately activated its intelligence team, leveraging digital surveillance analysis and coordinated field operations to identify and apprehend the suspects."
The command also encouraged residents to remain calm and continue their lawful activities, assuring them that proactive measures are in place to prevent and combat all forms of criminality within the state. This incident underscores the effectiveness of community-police collaboration and the use of technology in modern crime-fighting efforts.
