Oyo Police Arrest Suspect in Fatal Community Altercation, Victim Dies in Hospital
The Oyo State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of one Giwa Sodiq in connection with the death of a man identified as Kehinde, also known as “Ogo Ojigbo,” during an altercation in Asalu Community, Lalupon, located in the Lagelu Local Government Area of the state.
Police Statement Details Incident and Response
In a statement issued on Monday, February 16, 2026, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, disclosed that the arrest was part of the command's proactive measures to maintain law and order and protect lives within Oyo State.
According to the PPRO, a preliminary investigation revealed that community authorities reported to the Iyana-Offa Division after being alerted by security guards about a confrontation involving a group of youths within the community.
"The injured individuals were immediately rushed to Ojo Oluwa Hospital, Iyana-Offa, for medical attention, where one of the victims, identified as Kehinde, later succumbed to his injuries," the statement read.
Swift Police Action and Ongoing Efforts
Upon receipt of the report, a team of police operatives led by the Divisional Police Officer, Supol Iyana-Offa, promptly proceeded to the scene and the hospital. Photographs were taken for documentation purposes, and the suspect, Giwa Sodiq, was arrested in connection with the incident.
The corpse of the deceased has been deposited at Adeo State Hospital Morgue, Ring Road, Ibadan, for preservation and autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
Efforts are ongoing to apprehend other fleeing suspects to ensure full prosecution of all individuals involved in the altercation.
Commissioner of Police Commends Operatives and Urges Public Cooperation
The Commissioner of Police, CP Femi Haruna PSC (+), commended the swift response of the operatives and urged residents to remain vigilant and report criminal activities promptly to the authorities.
He also appealed to members of the public with credible information that could lead to the arrest of the remaining suspects to come forward and assist the police in their investigations.
"He further appreciates the continuous guidance of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu PSC (+), NPM, in strengthening community policing and law enforcement across the State," the statement added.
Members of the public are encouraged to cooperate with security agencies to ensure that communities remain safe and secure for all residents, reinforcing the importance of community involvement in crime prevention.
