The Oyo State Police Command has successfully apprehended a suspected notorious kidnapper and recovered an AK-47 rifle during a meticulously coordinated, intelligence-driven operation within the state. This significant breakthrough was achieved following credible information provided by a vigilant member of the public, who alerted security agencies to the presence of three armed men allegedly operating in forests and farmlands around the Ikoyi-Ile area.

Coordinated Security Response Leads to Arrest

Acting promptly on the tip-off, a joint security team, led by the Divisional Police Officer of Ikoyi-Ile Division, mobilized to the specified location and conducted a thorough combing of the surrounding bushes. The operation resulted in the arrest of one suspect, identified as Muhammadu Abubakar. Items recovered from him include an AK-47 rifle with breach number 6628/2274, six rounds of 7.62mm live ammunition, and three live cartridges.

Police authorities have hailed this arrest as a major breakthrough in ongoing efforts to curb violent crimes, particularly kidnapping, across Oyo State. During interrogation, the suspect reportedly confessed to involvement in a series of kidnapping operations along the Ogbomoso–Ikoyi-Ile axis. He is also said to have links to cross-border criminal activities spanning state lines and had been on the Command's watchlist prior to his capture.

Investigation and Manhunt Intensify

The Commissioner of Police, Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga, has directed that the suspect be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further, in-depth investigation. Concurrently, security operatives have launched a comprehensive manhunt for other members of the gang who remain at large, intensifying efforts to dismantle the criminal network entirely.

The police boss commended the officers involved in the operation for their professionalism and unwavering dedication, emphasizing that intelligence-led policing remains a critical strategy in tackling criminal activities effectively. He also expressed appreciation for the support of the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, whose strategic leadership has enhanced operational efficiency across various police commands.
