Police Arrest Suspected Kidnapper in Rivers, Recover Weapons After Foiled Abduction
Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force in Rivers State have successfully arrested a suspected member of a kidnapping gang and recovered two AK-47 rifles, magazines, and ammunition following a foiled abduction attempt in Port Harcourt. This operation is part of ongoing security reinforcement efforts under the leadership of the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, aimed at curbing violent crime in the region.
Details of the Incident and Police Response
The Command’s Spokesperson, CSP Grace Iringe-Koko, reported that the incident occurred in the early hours of March 20, 2026, after a distress call from a 35-year-old resident, Fadi Nasser. The victim stated that heavily armed men stormed his residence on Orogbum Crescent, along Woji Road in the Government Reserved Area (GRA), in an attempt to abduct her. During the invasion, the attackers reportedly opened fire, but in a dramatic turn of events, the victim managed to escape unharmed. Security officials described this outcome as both fortunate and pivotal, as it enabled a swift police response to the scene.
Investigations gained significant momentum when operatives recovered a mobile phone believed to belong to one of the suspects at the location. Iringe-Koko explained that the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) unit based in Aluu deployed technical intelligence to track the device, which led to the arrest of Joseph Abibo, identified as a key member of the kidnapping syndicate. Under interrogation, Abibo reportedly provided useful information that guided police operatives to the gang’s hideout.
Gun Duel and Recovery of Weapons
Upon arrival at the hideout, officers came under heavy gunfire from other members of the group, triggering a fierce exchange. Iringe-Koko detailed the confrontation: “Police operatives engaged the suspects in a gun duel and eventually overpowered them. In the aftermath, several gang members fled the scene, with our men confirming that about six suspects escaped into a nearby river, reportedly with gunshot wounds.”
A thorough search of the hideout resulted in the recovery of two AK-47 rifles, four magazines, and 108 rounds of live ammunition, which are believed to have been used in the gang’s criminal operations. Iringe-Koko noted that a coordinated manhunt is currently underway to apprehend the fleeing suspects and recover additional weapons, emphasizing the command’s commitment to dismantling kidnapping networks across Rivers State.
Commitment to Public Safety and Ongoing Efforts
This operation underscores intensified efforts by the police command to combat violent crime and enhance security in the area. Iringe-Koko urged residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies by providing timely and credible information that could aid ongoing investigations. The command reaffirmed its dedication to protecting lives and property, assuring the public that further updates will be communicated as the investigation progresses, with a focus on apprehending all involved suspects and preventing future incidents.
