Lagos Police Arrest Three Suspected Car Parts Thieves After Surveillance Operation

The Lagos State Police Command has successfully apprehended three individuals suspected of being part of a notorious criminal syndicate that specializes in stealing expensive vehicle parts. The arrests were made following an extensive surveillance operation that lasted several months, highlighting the police's commitment to combating crime in the metropolis.

Details of the Arrest and Suspects

The suspects have been identified as Obinna Okeke (27), Emmanuel Anyanwu (38), and Joshua Nkemdirim (31). According to police reports, they are members of a well-organized gang known for disguising themselves as security operatives to gain unauthorized access into residential estates across Lagos. Their modus operandi involved using a modified Mercedes car jack, which was altered to resemble firearms, to intimidate and breach security measures.

It was revealed that the gang traveled out of Lagos in December 2025 and returned in January 2026 to resume their criminal activities. However, their luck ran out when police detectives, acting on intelligence gathered during the surveillance period, moved in and arrested them.

Criminal Activities and Recovered Items

The syndicate primarily targeted high-value components from vehicles, including brain boxes, wiring systems, side mirrors, tapping glasses, and control devices. They had reportedly vandalized several Toyota vehicles and other SUVs within various estates in Lagos. During the arrest, police recovered a brain box, a Mercedes Benz jack, number plates, and other items believed to be stolen or used in their operations.

Upon interrogation, the suspects confessed to being active members of the criminal network and admitted to their involvement in vandalizing vehicles in Lagos and its surrounding areas. Their confessions have provided crucial insights into the gang's operations and are aiding ongoing investigations.

Police Response and Community Advisory

The outgoing Commissioner of Police, Assistant Inspector General (AIG) Moshood Jimoh, confirmed that the suspects corroborated the allegations against them and are currently assisting detectives with the investigation. He emphasized that efforts are being intensified to apprehend other members of the gang to ensure they face prosecution.

AIG Jimoh issued a strong advisory to residents, particularly estate management and security guards, urging them to remain vigilant. He advised that whenever individuals present themselves as operatives of any security agency seeking entry into estates, basic verification should be conducted. Additionally, he encouraged collaboration with the police by contacting the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in their area to confirm the authenticity of such personnel before granting access. In cases of doubt, individuals should be immediately referred to the nearest police division.

Strengthening Community Security

The Commissioner assured the public that through increased vigilance, cooperation, and timely reporting, the safety and security of all communities in Lagos can be significantly strengthened. This arrest serves as a reminder of the importance of community-police partnerships in tackling crime and maintaining order in urban areas.
